Enuf material
So, I'm taking this oral communication class. Our first speech is of self introduction for 5-7 minutes using an object as a spring board. So, of course, I'm planning to use a marathon medal to talk about running.

To brainstorm ideas I set up my computer to video me as I babble. 16 minutes. Hopefully I'll be able to use some of it...

Martian Marathon
First the numbers:

Time: 3:27:46.4
Pace: 7:56/mile
Place(s): AG 12/31, Gender 68/281, OA 71/415

I really couldn't have asked for a better race day. The temps were perfect for me: in the high 30s to start, in the 40s for the bulk of the race, and probably low 50s at the end. I don't believe that I really started sweating until mile 10, which is unusual for me.

Lots of babbling behind the cutCollapse )

Hey all you Dr Who/Torchwood fans (fen?)
Which would you start off with- Dr. Who Season 1 (Christopher Eccleston) or Torchwood? I find myself wanting to start to build that library, and the seasons are only ~$25.00 on iTunes. Not as good as the DVDs, but...

Volunteering for Rockhead
Inaugural races are tough.

There are always kinks to be worked out, last minute snafus, miscommunications, mistakes, and plain old maliciousness. All of which can be issues when setting up for a trail race. Especially on confusing trails. Especially for something as long as a marathon.

Thankfully, that wasn't my problem- all i had to do was tell people to go left. Three miles later, when they got back to me, I told them to go left again, back from whence they came. It's nice to be a cog in the mechanism, only responsible for one thing rather than hundreds.

more babble here!Collapse )

Weekly training
Okay, trying to get back into the swing of training regularly again, with something like focus. I finally have a goal again- that is, the Martian Marathon (or half, depending) on April 11th. It's 25 weeks away, which gives me a lot of time, but I'd like to try to take this slow and see how it goes.

Goal for the week- 45 milesCollapse )

Taking running seriously again
So I spectated the Detroit Marathon again, second year... um.. not running- and it made me want to take running seriously again.

What exactly this means, I'm not sure. I thought it might mean having a healthier diet, but after my run this morning I went home, had lunch, and finished it off with cheesecake. Very yummy cheesecake. With cherries.

Cherries are healthy, right?

I thought it might mean finding a program, settling into a set pattern of miles per day and week, scheduled exercises and scheduled rest. But I don't have a race in mind, and the only one that comes to mind is in April of next year. Most training programs I know aren't that long.

I don't even know if I want to focus on the half marathon distance, the full, or maybe doing an ultra. But I'm kind of hoping that my days of undisciplined and unfocused casting about are over. I'll let you know how it goes...

Just one of those days...
I've into the same room three times for the same thing only to forget when I got there, found my Garmin wasn't charged when I wanted to go for a run, and searched fruitlessly for five minutes looking for something in my back pocket.

So far as days off go, this one has not seen me at my best.

Great Lakes Relay
The hard part wasn't running 28 or so miles of trails and roads which were more sand than solid ground, more hills than flats, and much more twisty/turny than straight away.

The hard part also wasn't getting lost and realizing that every moment you've run in the wrong direction not only makes you more lost, but also costs you lots and lots of time.

No, the hard part is organizing 10 people in three cars, getting the right people to the right place at the right time, and dealing with all the snafus and issues that comes from lost keys, runners switching legs, runners in the wrong cars, randomly being left behind, or randomly being picked up by the wrong car.

Logistics. It really does come down to logistics.

Great Lakes relay is a 280 miles race across Northern Michigan, from the east side of the state to the west, involving 80 odd teams, lots of runners, cars, and the odd thundershower and inhaled bug. In the end you're lucky if you average more than five hours of sleep a night, get more than junk food to eat, and the smell in your car doesn't asphyxiate you.

Great Lakes Relay...
So I'll be doing Great Lakes Relay This weekend. I'm reading up on my first leg, which I'll be doing on Friday. Here's the summery...

In Short: The Shore to Shore Trail here is not used extensively so it is a little more rugged and hard to follow in spots. We think we’ve marked it pretty well to keep you on course but there may be times you’ll be wondering where the hell you are.

... whatever have I gotten myself into? :)

It's been three years since the last time I set up my Yurt, and not only do I remember how, but everything still works together relatively well! Color me amazed. The canvas is still in great shape (except the door, but the door is another story), the Khana, Oni and Tono (thono?) all fit together, and I wasn't bonked in the head to falling rafters at all!

*sigh* pity it doesn't fit into my new car, though.

Cheesegasm #2
I've been doing some traveling, and managed to sample a few new cheeses... none from whole foods this time, though. I'll get to a race report soon enough...

another marathon
Leaving for another marathon tomorrow. I had great hopes for this one, but what appears to be a tear, or cyst, or something in my lower leg is... disappointing the hell out of me.

Oh well. Such is life, I guess. Wish me luck, or at least a better attitude! :)
